Fascia is the most pervasive, but perhaps least understood network of the human body. No longer considered the 'scraps' of cadaver dissections, fascia has now attracted the attention of scientists and clinicians alike. Yet many scientists and clinicians working in fasciae are unfamiliar or have limited experiences with each other's work.

The Fascia Research Society (FRS) and the Fascia Research Congress (FRC) have been established to facilitate, encourage and support the dialogue and collaboration between clinicians, researchers and academicians, in order to further our understanding of the properties and functions of fasciae.

DBM Fasciatherapy has many members participating for FRC and FRS. There are professionnal associations that support field studies designed to document how the psychotonic touch of DBM Fasciatherapy is experienced in the reality of private practice. These studies focus on how patients perceive the improvements to their health, wellbeing, self-relationship and relationship to their lives. In some cases equipment has been used to measure the particular impact of psychotonic touch on biomedical indicators, as for example a study carried out on blood flow using medical ultrasound (Quéré et al., 2009).

DBM Fasciatherapy is a subject of research programmes initiated by the CERAP, a research laboratory affiliated to Fernando Pessoa University, Portugal. The main research on DBM Fasciatherapy focuses on the body-mind tonus ("psychotonus") and the non-specific effects that are triggered by the particular touch that is used and by the gestural tools that complement the manual approach.

There are two main strands to the research :

  1. Study and conceptualization of

  • The psychotonic mechanisms at play within the manual relational touch of DBM Fasciatherapy and its associated tonic architecture

  • Perceptual enrichment processes and the appearance of particular bodily sense-experiences, as expressions of a real body language that relates to the psychological state of the invididual

  • The body-mind tuning process that takes place within the psychotonic dialogue

  1. Impact assessment of psychotonic touch and psychotonic dialogue with regards to health issues, wellbeing, relationship to self, others and the world.
